What is Sildenafil?
viagra pills Sildenafil contains the active substance sildenafil which belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5). It works by dilating the blood vessels of the penis.
How does Sildenafil Work?
Sildenafil is an orally administered therapy for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The physiological mechanism responsible for the erection of the penis involves the release of nitric oxide (NO) in the corpora cavernosa during sexual stimulation. Nitric oxide activates the guanylate cyclase enzyme, leading to increased levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which produces a relaxation of the smooth muscle in the corpora cavernosa of the penis, allowing the influx of blood.
Sildenafil is a potent and selective inhibitor of cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). The corpora cavernosa, where PDE5 is responsible for the degradation of the cGMP. Sildenafil acts on the peripheral level above the erection. Sildenafil does not have a direct relaxing effect on the bodies. When the NO / cGMP pathway is activated, as occurs during sexual stimulation, the inhibition of Sildenafil PDE5 causes increased cGMP levels in the corpora cavernosa. So, sexual stimulation is necessary for sildenafil to produce its beneficial pharmacological effects planned.
