Fast-Acting Insulin for Diabetes Treatment
ActRapid Insulin is a fast-acting insulin replacement medication that is used for diabetes treatment and conditions such as hyperglycaemia to provide the body with requisite amounts of insulin for the metabolisation of sugars and glucose in the bloodstream
What is ActRapid Insulin?
ActRapid Insulin is a fast-acting insulin replacement medication that can be taken before meals throughout the day to provide the body with requisite doses of insulin for the metabolisation of sugars and glucose in the bloodstream. it is used to treat conditions such as hyperglycaemia, commonly known as diabetes.
it is chemically the same as the insulin generated naturally in the body and acts in the same way. It is synthesised by micro-organisms that possess recombinant DNA, allowing them to replicate and produce human insulin. In conditions such as hyperglycaemia and diabetes, the body may produce inadequate amounts of insulin, or the insulin produced naturally by the body may be ineffective. In such a case, an external source of insulin is required to help the body metabolise glucose and sugars in the bloodstream.
How Does ActRapid Insulin Work?
ActRapid Insulin is made through a technology known as recombinant-DNA technology. Through this technology, the DNA of a micro-organism is combined with human DNA to create enzymes and proteins that are completely like natural human proteins and enzymes. it is made by recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is commonly known as Brewer’s Yeast.
Once injected into the body, the insulin acts in the same way as natural human insulin. It enables the body to metabolise glucose, thereby reducing the amount of sugar in the blood. This helps the body obtain energy from food by breaking down glucose and allows patients of diabetes to manage their food intake and blood glucose levels.
What are the Benefits of ActRapid Insulin?
Patients suffering from diabetes and hyperglycaemia usually have abnormally high amounts of glucose in the blood as their body is unable to synthesise insulin naturally. Thus, they require an external source of insulin to help the body metabolise glucose. ActRapid Insulin is injected into the body and works in the same way as the insulin made within the human body, leading to a decrease in the concentration of sugar or glucose in the blood, which is necessary for patients suffering from hyperglycaemia/diabetes.
- Lower Blood Sugar Levels
- Enable Body to Metabolise Glucose and Sugars
- Treat Hyperglycaemia and Diabetes
How Is ActRapid Insulin Used?
ActRapid Insulin comes in the form of a solution that is intended for use through an injection. A specified amount of ActRapid Insulin is taken and can be injected into the waist, the shoulders, the buttocks and the abdomen. The ActRapid Insulin is absorbed from the injection point into the bloodstream where it interacts with insulin receptors that are naturally present in the body and help them begin the process of metabolisation, which breaks down glucose and sugars to release energy for the proper functioning of the body.
ActRapid Insulin Dosage Information
The usual dosage for adults is between 0.3 to 1 international units per Kilogram of body weight per day. The ActRapid Insulin comes in a vial containing 10ml of the solution, which equates to 1000 international units in total, or 100 international units per ml.
The solution must be injected into the mentioned body parts at least 30 minutes before a meal. It can be used in combination with other long duration or extended-release insulin medication.
The solution can also be injected intravenously by healthcare professionals at a concentration of 0.05 to 1 international units per ml.
ActRapid Insulin Side Effects and Precautions
Side Effects of using ActRapid Insulin are rare as the medication is well-studied and relatively safe for most users. In case of adverse reactions, the following side-effects can occur:
- Urticaria
- Rash
- Swelling of injection site
- Anaphylactic shock
- Hypoglycaemia
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Refraction disorder
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Lipodystrophy
- Oedema
Precautions indicate that the medication poses no risk in usage during pregnancy, lactation and has no effect on fertility. Precautions that are necessary to avoid hypoglycaemia include ensuring proper food intake, avoiding strenuous physical exercise, and avoiding operating heavy machinery. The dosage must be modulated according to individual requirements, as inadequate dosage may lead to hyperglycaemia.
Indications for ActRapid Insulin
ActRapid Insulin is indicated for the treatment of conditions such as Hyperglycaemia, Diabetes, and other health conditions where the body is unable to synthesise requisite amounts of insulin naturally or may possess defects that lead to improper functioning of insulin created by the body.
