Epiduo Gel

Epiduo is used for the treatment of acne. This gel is a combination of two active ingredients, adapalene, and benzoyl peroxide, which work together but by different mechanisms: Adapalene belongs to a group of products known as retinoids and specifically acts on the skin processes that cause acne. The other active ingredient, benzoyl peroxide, acts as an antimicrobial agent and smoothes and flakes the outermost layer of the skin.

Epiduo combines two active substances, which act through different, but complementary, mechanisms of action.

– Adapalene: Adapalene is a chemically stable naphthoic acid derivative with retinoid activity. Biochemical and pharmacological profile studies have shown that adapalene works in the pathology of acne vulgaris: it is a powerful modulator of cell differentiation and keratinization and has anti-inflammatory properties. Pharmacodynamically, adapalene binds to specific nuclear receptors for retinoic acid. The evidence to date suggests that topical adapalene normalizes the differentiation of follicular epithelial cells resulting in a decrease in the formation of the microcomedone. Adapalene inhibits the chemotactic (directional) and chemokinetic (random) responses of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes in vitro test models; It also inhibits the metabolism of arachidonic acid to inflammatory mediators. In vitro studies showed inhibition of AP-1 factors and inhibition of Toll-like 2 receptor expression. This profile suggests that the cellular-mediated inflammatory component of acne is reduced by adapalene.

– Benzoyl peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide has been shown to have antimicrobial activity, particularly against P. acnes, which is abnormally present in the pilosebaceous unit affected by acne. Additionally, benzoyl peroxide has been shown to have exfoliative and keratolytic activities. Benzoyl peroxide is also aerostatic, counteracting the excessive sebum production associated with acne.

Epiduo gel belongs to a group of medicines known as “anti-acne preparations for topical use”, that is, it is used for the treatment of acne vulgaris, in the presence of comedones (blackheads), numerous papules and pustules (pimples inflamed). Epiduo should only be used in adults, adolescents, and children from 9 years of age.

This medicine is for external use only.

Apply a thin layer of gel evenly to acne-affected areas once daily before bed, avoiding eyes, lips, and nostrils. The skin must be clean and dry before application. You should wash your hands carefully after using Epiduo.

Your doctor will tell you how long you will need to use Epiduo. If you think that the action of Epiduo is too strong or weak, tell your doctor or pharmacist. If you experience persistent irritation when applying Epiduo, contact your doctor.

You may be instructed to apply a moisturizing product, use the gel less frequently, stop using it for a short period of time, or stop using it altogether.

If you use more Epiduo than you should

If you use more Epiduo than you should on your skin, your acne will not heal any faster and your skin may become irritated and red.

Contact your doctor or hospital:

• If you have used more Epiduo than you should.
• If a child has accidentally taken this medicine.
• If you accidentally swallow this medicine
• Your doctor will tell you what steps should be taken.

If you forget to use Epiduo

Do not apply a double dose to make up for forgotten individual doses.
