Bonviva is used for the treatment of osteoporosis (a disease that weakens bones) in postmenopausal women at risk of bone fractures. Studies have shown that it reduces the risk of spinal fractures, but its effectiveness in femoral (hip) neck fractures has not been guaranteed. This medication can only be dispensed with a prescription.

What are Bonviva ibandronic acid tablets?

ibandronic acid can reverse bone loss by preventing more bone loss and increasing bone mass in most women who take it, even when they are unable to see or appreciate the difference. Bonviva can help reduce cases of broken bones (fractures). This reduction has been demonstrated in vertebral fractures but not in hip fractures.

Bonviva has been prescribed to treat your osteoporosis because you are at high risk for fractures. Osteoporosis consists of a thinning and weakening of the bones, which is common among women after menopause. At menopause, the ovaries stop producing the female hormone – estrogens – that helps preserve the health of the skeleton.

How does it work?

Osteoporosis manifests when the production of new bone is insufficient to replace the bone that is naturally destroyed. Bones gradually become thin, brittle and susceptible to fracture. Osteoporosis occurs more frequently in women after menopause, when estrogen levels drop, since this female hormone helps keep bones healthy.

The active substance in Bonviva, Ibandronic Acid, is a bisphosphonate. Inhibits the action of osteoclasts, the cells that are responsible for the destruction of bone tissue. By blocking its action, the bone loss is less

What are the benefits of taking it?

Two studies demonstrated that 150 mg monthly tablets and injections were more effective than 2.5 mg tablets daily to increase bone density in the spine and hip. In two years, the bone density of the spine increased 7% with the monthly tablets and 6% with the injections, compared to 5% of daily tablets. Hip bone density increased by 4% with monthly tablets and 3% with injections, compared to 2% of daily tablets.
